HSE respiratory health site inspection initiative for the construction sector

On Thursday 26th May, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) issued an eBulletin communicating that there will be site inspections across Great Britain throughout June 2022. The visits are an integral part of HSE’s wider-phased, strategic plan developed to improve health within the construction industry.

HSE has reminded us that every week, workers in the construction industry develop serious lung diseases that can have a devastating impact on them and their families.

During June, HSE will be carrying out a health inspection initiative focusing on the respiratory risks to construction workers from exposure to dust.

From Monday 6 June – Friday 1 July 2022, the inspections will be taking place and your site could be included as part of the initiative.

About respiratory health on construction sites

Ultimately, the initiative aims to support industry by raising awareness of health issues in relation to dust exposure to improve the long-term health of those working in construction.

Dust particles can be 100 times smaller than a grain of sand. You don’t need to see them to breathe them in. Once in your lungs, dust will start causing damage.

Exposure to dust can lead to severe breathing difficulties and lung diseases that can ruin lives and cause an early death.

It can take years before the damage is visible and by then it can be too late. Make sure you are aware of the risks and work in ways that always protect your lung health.

Rights and responsibilities when working on a construction site

Employers:

Regardless of the size of your business, you have a legal responsibility to protect workers’ health. Plan jobs to eliminate the risks from dust where you can. Otherwise, use measures to control dust and minimise the risk.

Construction workers:

Don’t gamble with your future health by taking unnecessary risks today. Talk to your employer about the risks from dust and how to avoid them.
