The International Powered Access Federation (IPAF) is a global not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the safe and effective use of powered access equipment, such as mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and mast climbing work platforms. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in the UK, IPAF represents the interests of manufacturers, rental companies, contractors, training providers and equipment users involved in the powered access industry.

IPAF’s core mission is to improve safety and standards across the sector. It does this by providing technical guidance, influencing legislation and international standards, and delivering industry-leading safety campaigns and research. The federation also acts as a forum where companies and professionals can collaborate, share expertise and address common industry challenges.

One of IPAF’s most recognised contributions is its global training programme for powered access operators. Training is delivered through a worldwide network of approved training centres, with successful candidates receiving the PAL Card (Powered Access Licence) — widely recognised as proof of high-quality operator training. Each year, hundreds of thousands of operators complete IPAF-approved courses designed to improve competence and reduce accidents when working at height.
Today, IPAF has members in more than 80 countries, many of whom operate the majority of the world’s powered access rental fleet and manufacture a large proportion of the equipment used globally. Through training, guidance and industry representation, IPAF plays a key role in helping organisations use powered access equipment safely, efficiently and responsibly.
